The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
