Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then found multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police say early analysis indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are presently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
A high-ranking political figure commented the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
