Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after the ex-president accused a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be arrested and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.

The Message That Triggered the Controversy

The clip, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who previously acted in military or security capacities.

"Like us, you all took an pledge to protect and defend this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the brief video. "At present, the dangers to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can decline improper directives, you can decline unlawful commands, you must refuse unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that violate the legal system or our founding principles."

Trump's Angry Reply

The clip reportedly trigger a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On Thursday morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate message, he declared: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our Country. Their statements cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Representatives Respond

Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership published a unified statement censuring the remarks.

"Political violence has no role in America," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all acted our United States with great patriotism and excellence. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."

The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to guarantee the security of these officials and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical online messages and withdraw his violent language before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.

Officials' Strong Answer

The officials who were featured in the video also published a response.

"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who value this United States and made an oath to defend and support the constitution of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge continues forever, and we intend to maintain it. No threat, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that important obligation."

"The most revealing aspect is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and duty to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They stated: "Every American must join forces and condemn the former president's calls for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for principled stance."

More Political Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on online networks: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."

He continued: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should denounce this right away and unconditionally."

The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of Congress telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in US history."

The GOP official also allegedly informed media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to parse the terminology and establish all that."

Administration Reaction

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a media member, "Is the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."

"We should understand about what the former president is reacting to," the representative stated. "There are current representatives of the American legislature who conspired to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She stated: "The integrity of our military relies on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can cause fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially encouraging."
