Discord, a communication service widely used by gaming communities, reports that verified identity pictures of about 70,000 users have potentially been leaked in the wake of a digital security breach.

Partner Company Compromised

The application, which boasts more than 200 million users internationally, confirms that digital intruders had compromised a firm that assisted in confirming the ages of its account holders but the main application was not breached.

Account holders can submit official pictures to confirm their age on Discord - a networking hub for gamers to interact and distribute materials with fellow users in the player network.

Extent of Data Exposure

The leaked data potentially contains personal information, fragmentary financial data and messages that were exchanged with the company's help desk staff.

Entire financial data remained secure, security codes, or messages and activity outside of interactions with Discord's service team were leaked, the company stated.

Action Taken

All impacted users have been notified and Discord is collaborating with authorities to investigate the matter, it added.

The company said it has terminated the third-party service's permissions for the infrastructure that was targeted in the breach. Discord did not name the partner organization compromised.

Divergent Reports

Some online commentators have claimed that the security incident was more extensive than Discord has disclosed.

A official for Discord commented that those claims are inaccurate and "constitute an effort to extort payment" from the company.

"We decline to pay those accountable for their unauthorized deeds," the spokesperson continued.

Value of Personal Data

Digital thieves frequently target individual details, which can fetch substantial sums on the black market for use in deceptive practices.

Details including full names and official ID numbers is highly sought-after because, different from financial data, it typically remains unchanged through the years.

Past Verification Measures

Discord has in the past enhanced its user authentication protocols in answer to apprehensions that some servers on the application were being used to distribute inappropriate and harmful content.

  • About 70,000 users affected
  • Partner authentication service provider targeted
  • Partial credit card details potentially exposed
  • Help desk messages could have been viewed
  • Police participating in probe
