Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
