Israelis have come together across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".
The government authorities delayed official memorials until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

The source said the day's discussions finished without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the deal.
He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are striving to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.
Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Research now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israelis want the hostilities to end in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.
