The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, was not quick to announce this decision right away after his electoral win in November.

"This decision came down to our family's safety and the importance of dedicating my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

A Contentious Issue

During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

But his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he is from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.

With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
