The most severe possible consequences of the climate emergency for the UK have been detailed by experts, ranging from a scorching 4C rise in average temperatures to a two-metre increase in ocean levels. Another scenario envisions a decline of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt farming and energy demand.

Possible Outcomes, Not Guarantees

These consequences, a number of which are connected to irreversible climate shifts, are seen as low probability but possible. The scientists said that these projections addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had rendered the UK unprepared for worst-case results.

"The worst-case scenarios we have detailed aren’t predictions, but they are possible," said the lead researcher who directed the research. "The UK has been making preparations lacking the frameworks to test against worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied planners what they need to plan for environmental results they wish to avoid, but dare not dismiss."

A Range of Extreme Weather Projections

Another collection of severe models sets out the potential extent of severe conditions between now and the year 2100. These suggest that temperatures could soar in some months by up to 6C higher than historical levels, while precipitation could be three times standard measurements.
