Republicans in the state of California have initiated a federal lawsuit on Wednesday, challenging a high-stakes redistricting measure that could shift up to five House seats to the benefit of the Democratic party.
This initiative, Proposition 50, was approved by voters on Tuesday evening, marking a decisive victory for the Democratic side. The plan grants on a temporary basis the power to draw electoral boundaries to the California legislature, allowing it to approve maps that will help the Democratic party pick up five congressional seats in the House of Representatives.
The plan is a targeted countermeasure to gerrymandering in the state of Texas, where Republicans, following the US president's direction, have created a number of new safe Republican districts.
