The Caribbean Nation Grants US Military Access to National Airfields As Growing Tensions with Venezuela

Officials in Trinidad and Tobago has announced it will allow the United States military to utilize its airports shortly. This move occurs amid increasing strained relations between the US and its neighbor Venezuela.

Radar Installation Sparks Debate

This announcement comes after the installation of a sophisticated radar system at an airport in Tobago. National the government maintain the radar's intended role is for fighting illegal operations, asserting it is not a launchpad for attacks against foreign states.

Government opponents argue, however, that these arrangements might entangle Trinidad and Tobago into ex-President Donald Trump's intensifying political strategy against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Scope of Agreement and Official Statements

According to a foreign affairs statement, US operations at the airports would be “logistical in nature”, enabling stocking provisions and regular staff changes. Officials offered no specifics regarding the scope.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has previously praised US operations targeting alleged drug trafficking vessels in regional waters, actions that have reportedly led to dozens of deaths, including a number of Trinidadian citizens.

Earlier Statements and Later Disclosures

Initially, Persad-Bissessar stated a US C-17 aircraft that landed in Tobago was carrying marines to help on a local road construction project. However, when pictures emerged of the radar installation, she acknowledged that at least 100 marines were stationed in the country, along with the powerful radar.

The radar, identified as a long-range AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR, is marketed as aerial monitoring, defense, and artillery detection operations.

Close Neighbors

The twin-island nation lies extremely close from Venezuela at their closest point. It has main international gateways: Piarco International in Trinidad and ANR Robinson International in Tobago.

This development comes after a previous incident in October, when a US warship was stationed in Trinidad's capital, signaling the Trump administration's increased military pressure on Venezuela.

Meanwhile, US lawmakers have expressed doubts about the lawfulness of the recent maritime strikes and have called for a formal investigation.
