Out of all the adult-oriented cartoon movies I’ve ever viewed, no other has lingered in my mind as much as the fear-filled ending of a explicitly bloody and deeply subversive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based filmmaker created a dark, somber , frequently brutal world that included some tiny , forlorn twinges of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from a desire to expand animation even more, the filmmaker stated that it was rather an attempt to communicate a universal, cross-cultural message concerning “the shared root of every conflict.”
That message is expressed through a group of vividly colored bears , obviously based on a famous series of lovable figures.
Being raised in a culture centered on aggression as well as the war machine, many of the bears are fixated on killing the mythical beasts, due to a holy book that claims the bears they were once kings of the woods, until the horned beings drove them out.
A few did not entirely bought into the indoctrination, , choose to experiment with narcotics or engage sexually in the forest.
In contrast to their gentle equivalents, these colorful critters display sexual organs and clear libidos.
For a particular notably brutal, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the war with the unicorns transforms into a road to control — and specifically to authority above his gentler, more compassionate sibling Tubby.
Bluey is a bully , a seeming antisocial figure , and when fear overcomes his unit and takes his teammates sequentially, he seizes more and more control for himself, in increasingly gory, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are suffering their own terror, through an expanding, destructive monster in their woods.
“In the early stages, it appears as a humorous movie,” the director commented. “Yet it becomes a more intense and sad film. And ultimately, it transforms into a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars begins resembling one of the most playful features by a legendary animator, that uncover a naughty glee in letting animated figures curse, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Subsequently it evolves into closer to a darker movie from that director, including ever more explicit brutality and a noticeable link to genuine suffering of battle.
In the finale, it is a full-on Grand Guignol bloodbath.
The terror that makes this a perfect Halloween movie starts a lot earlier than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is suited for the devoted gorehounds, for fans of graphic films who want to see something they haven’t ever seen on-screen before, and can endure a story that offers no restraint.
View it in a dark room with no disturbances, and the finale will crawl under your skin and stay with you.
