Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
