Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
Anyone might to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why not reference the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
