The United States Proposes a Decade and a Half of Security Guarantees, States President Zelenskyy.

Amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has disclosed that the United States has presented a draft peace framework encompassing protection pledges for Ukraine spanning a period of 15 years.

Details of the Proposal

President Zelenskyy indicated that in the course of significant talks with American leader President Trump, he had requested long-term defense assurances for as long as half a century. Nonetheless, the outlined plan calls for a reduced commitment of fifteen years from Washington.

It is not clear what these assurances would take, but the Ukrainian leader has been pushing for "article-5-like" security guarantees, inspired by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's founding principle that aggression towards any member is considered an attack on all.

Negotiation Developments

According to Zelenskyy, American defense commitments for Ukraine under the updated settlement framework have been completely settled, whereas the US President offered a more guarded assessment, suggesting the progress was more like ninety-five percent.

The two presidents affirmed that headway was accomplished during the Florida talks. President Trump did note, however that there were a couple of challenging outstanding issues, including over territory.

Conditions for Russian Talks

Separately, the Ukrainian President informed journalists that a meeting with Russia would be feasible following the American and European allies agreed on a Ukraine-proposed peace plan to bring hostilities to a close.

This remark comes after Donald Trump told the media that he thought a trilateral meeting between Russia, Ukraine and the US could happen when conditions are suitable.

Previous Interaction

Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin have not held direct talks since December 2019. Their last meeting, brokered by the French and German heads of state, was intended to renew efforts to settle the protracted hostilities.

More recently, in May 2025, the Kremlin leader opted not to go to Istanbul for discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, turning down a bold proposal to discuss peace in Turkey.

Outstanding Territorial Issues

A key point of contention continues to be the disposition of the Donbas territory. Trump said that a suggestion to turn the region, which is mostly under Russian control, into a demilitarised zone is still not settled.

Trump further commented that it will become clear in the coming weeks if the war can end.

Both sides have underscored that the protracted diplomatic process would persist as they work towards a final resolution to the nearly four-year war.
